Praetorian IQ: How We Built a Proprietary Cost Intelligence Platform for Mining Construction

September 8, 20264 min read

Praetorian IQ is our proprietary cost intelligence platform: real-time benchmarking, document intelligence and predictive analysis from delivered projects.

Mining construction projects fail on cost more often than on technical execution. Estimates drift, benchmarks are borrowed from the wrong projects, and by the time a variance shows up in a monthly report, the damage is already done.

Part of the challenge is volume. A large mining construction project generates a constant stream of invoices, progress claims, change orders and schedule updates. Turning that stream into a clear picture of where the project actually stands is a problem experienced project controls professionals have always faced.

Praetorian built Praetorian IQ to address this directly: not as a product for sale, but as a proprietary platform embedded in every client engagement.

Built for the Complexity of Mining Projects

Mining construction projects have characteristics that make cost intelligence particularly demanding. Multiple prime contractors, extensive subcontract structures, long-lead procurement with international supply chains, remote logistics and complex regulatory environments all generate cost data across different systems, formats and time horizons.

Praetorian IQ is designed to work within that complexity. It brings cost data from multiple sources into one consistent framework and surfaces the information that project owners and management teams need to make decisions.

What Praetorian IQ Is

Praetorian IQ is a cost intelligence platform built on Microsoft Azure and Claude AI. It draws on Praetorian’s own delivered project record, more than 40 projects across six countries over two decades, to give our teams and their clients a benchmark that no consultant or contractor can replicate.

It does three things:

Cost Benchmarking. As a project develops through its stage gates, Praetorian IQ compares the current cost position against comparable delivered projects at the same stage. Each gate (order of magnitude, pre-feasibility, feasibility and control estimate) has its own accuracy range, and our platform makes that visible in real time rather than in hindsight.

Document Intelligence. Contracts, estimates, reports, and correspondence are indexed and searchable in natural language. Instead of hunting through shared drives or waiting for a controls engineer to pull a number, the owner’s team can ask a question and get a cited answer in seconds.

Predictive Analysis. Cost outliers and schedule drift are flagged against the benchmark before they appear in a monthly report. Early identification changes the response from damage control to course correction.

AI-Powered, Not AI-Dependent

The AI capabilities within Praetorian IQ are designed to support experienced project controls professionals, not replace them. The platform surfaces patterns in cost data that are difficult to detect manually and flags anomalies. The analysis and judgment required to act on those insights remain with the people who know the project.

This distinction matters. The value of AI in project controls is not in automating decisions. It is in giving the people who make decisions better information, faster.

Why It Is Not a Standalone Product

Praetorian IQ is not a subscription platform and it is not available independently. The benchmark is only as good as the project data behind it, and that data belongs to Praetorian’s delivered project record. Its value comes from being embedded in an owner’s team engagement, where it operates alongside Praetorian’s project controls professionals rather than as a replacement for them.

The platform operates within the project controls framework that Praetorian’s teams establish at the outset of each project, drawing on the same data sources and reporting structures that govern day-to-day cost management.

What This Means for Project Owners

Owners who engage Praetorian get access to a cost intelligence capability that has taken two decades and more than 40 projects to build. It does not require a separate contract, a separate implementation, or a separate team to operate.

For project owners evaluating construction management partners, the question worth asking is not whether a firm uses software, because every firm does. The question is whether the benchmark behind the software was built on projects like yours, delivered by people who were accountable for the outcomes.

At Praetorian, the answer is yes.
